Jazz photographer Ron Hudson has made it his business to capture those translucent moments for 30 years.
More than 20,000 images later, he’s still enamored with the process and with the musicians who blend their energy and talent with his.
From such legends as Count Basie to Woody Herman, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald, and the young lions such as Stefon Harris, Joshua Redmond, Christian McBride and Regina Carter, Hudson has “sat in’’ with the best of them, recording their performance images on black & white film.
Hudson’s work is featured in four major books: Monterey Jazz Festival: Forty Legendary Years (with forward by Clint Eastwood) as well as A Paradise called Pebble Beach by author Ray March, A life in the Golden Age of Jazz, A Biography of Buddy DeFranco. and most recently Take Five, the public and private lives of Paul Desmond by Doug Ramsey.
Hudson, also an accomplished professional illustrator and graphic artist with numerous national and regional awards to his credit, was chosen to create the official poster for the 30th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival. In addition to the Monterey honor, Hudson’s photography and design skills have been tapped by the Pacific Kool Jazz Festival, the Pablo Jazz Concert Series, musicians Dave Brubeck, Dave Peck and David Friesen.
Hudson’s jazz photos have also been featured at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu Academy of Art, the Viewpoint Gallery in Carmel, California, Soil Gallery, Seattle, Centrum's Jazz Port Townsend and an on-going show of his jazz photography at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley in Seattle.
Ron says- "It has been an honor, a privilege and an education to photograph these incredible musicians. Giving back to jazz is important to me. A percentage of the sales of my jazz photography is donated to jazz education." Ron is a member of the Jazz Photographers Association and the International Association for Jazz Education.
